Fossil Leaves from the Green River Formation

Named for the present-day Green River, the Green River Formation is an Eocene geologic formation that records the sedimentation in a group of intermountain lakes that  exists as three separate basins around the Uinta Mountains of northeastern Utah, northwestern Colorado, and southwestern Wyoming.   The sediments of the formation were deposited in very fine layers, a dark layer during the growing season and a light-hued inorganic layer in winter. Each pair of layers is called a varve and represents one year. The sediments of the Green River Formation present a continuous record of six million years.

Petrified Wood

Petrified wood is the name given to the fossilized remains of trees. It is the result of a tree having turned completely into stone by the process of mineral replacement. Unlike other types of fossils, which are typically impressions or compressions, petrified wood is a three dimensional representation of the original organic material. The  process occurs underground when wood becomes buried under sediment, usually volcanic ash, and is preserved due to a lack of oxygen.  The lack of oxygen inhibits aerobic decomposition while mineral-laden water flows through the sediment depositing minerals in the plant's cells.  As the plant's lignin and cellulose decay, a mineral mold forms in its place.
