Great White Shark

Since the first sharks evolved over 400 million years ago, ways of life in the sea have changed very little. As a result, many of today's sharks are much like their ancient ancestors.  Modern sharks, such as the Great White Shark, can tell us a great deal about sharks that have been extinct for millions of years.

Shark teeth are produced on a conveyor belt of gum tissue that lines the inside surface of the upper and lower jaws.  New shark teeth are formed within this gum tissue and are carried into a functional position closer to the edge of the mouth.  Each shark tooth is functional for a few days or weeks before its nutrient supply is cut off and the tooth falls out.

Because shark teeth are dense and tough, and composed of relatively stable calcium phosphate, their potential for fossilization is high.

The shark teeth on this page are just a few of the thousands of teeth we have in stock. We have a great supply of fossil Great White shark teeth in perfect condition. If you do not see what you are looking for on this page, please call us at 321.783.7300

Fossil Mackerel Shark Teeth

This shark is known from fossil teeth and vertebra. Like other sharks, the skeleton of Otodus was composed of cartilage and not bone, resulting in relatively few preserved skeletal structures appearing within the fossil record. The teeth of this shark are large with triangular crown, smooth cutting edges, and visible cusps on the roots. Some Otodus teeth also show signs of evolving serrations. Scientists determined that Otodus evolved into the genus Carcharocles, given substantial fossil evidence in the form of transitional teeth.

WIRE WRAPPED FOSSIL SHARK TOOTH NECKLACES

The Lamna (also known as Otodus) shark was one of the largest sharks of the Late Cretaceous. It was one of the dominant predators of its time, and shared the water with a host of terrifying sea reptiles. The Lamna could get to over 40' long, and its tan-colored teeth are discovered in the Sahara Desert of Morocco where the Atlantic Ocean used to overlap.

Millions of years later, new species of sharks would also swim above Florida during the Miocene epoch. Quite a few of these sharks are ones that are still living today, such as the Bull shark, Lemon shark, and Dusky shark, whose black-colored teeth are featured on these necklaces. Like Morocco during the Cretaceous, Florida was under water during the Miocene epoch because of what was once a much larger Atlantic Ocean.
