Fossil Dragonfly Solnhofen
Tarsophlebia (Turanophlebia)
This is a beautifully preserved large dragonfly! The tree-like crystallized iron and manganese oxides, known as dendrites, outline this beautiful Solnhofen Limestone specimen.
The matrix measures 8-1/8″ wide x 6-1/2″ high
The wingspan of the dragonfly itself measures 4-1/2″.
The largest wingspan of dragonfly Tarsophlebia is 2.2 inches. This fossil specimen has a much larger wingspan, leading me to believe that it actually belongs to the Turanophlebia genus, where these individuals have a wingspan of greater than 4 inches.
